Lesson Plan—Civilization Cities with Linear Perspective—Art I High School

During my high school student teaching, students were given the same lesson as in elementary school with designing a Civilization City. We added the technique and skill of drawing a city with one-point perspective. In working with this technique, students realized they could work in two-point perspective, as well, which I allowed and was happy they made this discovery. I had the assignments for Avatars and Flags as well, but students were so enthralled with their city design in colored pencil--brainstorming about it, experimenting with the media, that we spent five weeks getting their final city drawings done.

Lesson plan is provided below.

Lesson Plan—Civilization City Sculptures, 5th Grade

5th Graders built paper sculpture cities based on their Civilization City design they drew at the beginning of the unit. They cane up with a name for their civilization. Their cities could be based on the past, present or future. Students were show a video of how to work with paper in three dimensions. It was open ended as to what they could build. Different colored construction paper, copy paper, and cardstock were provided, as well as glue stick and scissors. Some tape was also provided but students were told to work with it in a limited capacity.

Lesson Plan—Line Monsters, Kindergarten

Kindergarten lesson teaching students how to work with the element of line. Students were read a story about a line monster and then were shown different styles of line to draw on their watercolor paper with a black crayon. After drawing their lines, students applied watercolor rainbow colors as a wax resist. They then cut paper shapes for eyes, mouth, arms and legs. Finished pieces were displayed in the hallway on a bulletin board.

Mason Community Arts Academy—Summer Camp 2021

The third week in June I led an Art Camp with the Mason Community Arts Academy (MCAA). For six hours, 5 days during the week, I taught 16 six to eight year olds with the theme of "Birds, Sun, and Rain". I developed lessons and projects that went along with this theme, including Bird Costumes, Cyanotype Sun Prints, Handprint Suns with Tempera Paint, Watercolor Landscapes with Washable Markers, Splatter Umbrellas with Toothbrush and Paint, as well as learning songs in American Sign Language (ASL) that were theme related. The songs were Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds", Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life", and "Singing in the Rain" by Adolph Green starring Gene Kelly in the musical. Everything was well received by students and parents.
